Elon Musk actually follows through on Grok AI adaptation of The Odyssey

Image
Elon Musk doesn’t have a great track record of following through on his promises. According to MuskOmeter , a site that tracks the pledges Musk has made and whether he’s kept them, he’s at about a 24 percent hit rate. So it’s almost impressive that one of his sillier promises from this year actually came true. Late Friday afternoon, Musk shared the first of several planned episodes of an AI-generated version of Homer’s The Odyssey , made with Grok Imagine, the AI video generator from his company xAI. According to a post from the Grok Imagine account, the project is a collaboration between Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. Both specialize in generative AI filmmaking. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. Musk first made the promise in July. As Mashable reported at the time , he posted on X that, before the year ended, Grok Imagine would make a full-length  Odyssey  movie that would...

How AI is changing Halloween

Image
Growing up in Pittsburgh, my childhood Halloween hauls were 70 percent Clark Bars. Emptying my bag onto the living room floor, I’d channel my inner Ralphie from A Christmas Story , muttering a disappointed "Ohhhhh fuuudge!" at all that local chocolate. Because Clark Bars were manufactured in Pittsburgh, customers at the local G.C. Murphy or Thrift Drug could scoop up giant bags at markdown prices. Clark had Halloween cornered in southwestern Pennsylvania. Times have changed. Those stores are gone, Clark Bars are rare, and I’m old enough that I don't have to say "fudge" when I'm angry. But one thing hasn't changed: kids still treat trick-or-treating like a game of neighborhood Rolo roulette. Back then, anything besides a Clark Bar was a coveted confection. After I reluctantly grew up, I went into retail, leading media relations for Kmart and Sears. Our Kmart stores would load up on cheap candy before Halloween, and sales always topped costumes or decorati...

Delivery robots scan faces and collect customer biometric data, lawsuit alleges

Image
Two Chicago men are suing delivery robot companies Coco Robotics and Serve Robotics for allegedly collecting their biometric information without consent. The two separate class action lawsuits were filed earlier this month. Both claim that the robots' external cameras and internal LiDAR technology are used to scan and collect measurements of customers' faces and hands as they approach the devices. That data was then retained and used to train AI systems, according to the plaintiffs, and attached to personally identifiable information like names and addresses. SEE ALSO: Judge asked to toss 60-year prison sentence over use of Flock cameras One suit filed against Coco Robotics claims the company didn't disclose to customers that its device would scan and collect information, thereby violating Illinois privacy laws. It also extends the privacy violation claim to the use of remote human operators, who were allegedly abl...
